Artistic Enlightenment – Opening the Door to Positive Education

In 2018-2019, an Art Week with the theme of “Love. In line with the core values of love and joy advocated by CUHK Positive Education, parents and children are encouraged to be creative and express love through artworks. “Although children are unable to express their feelings in concrete terms, using art as a medium to express their love and gratitude will help them learn to love and cherish their family members, classmates, teachers and even their community.

Integrating Art and Positive Psychology
In order to implement positive education more effectively, our school has joined the “Promoting Positive Education: Towards Holistic Development” project organized by the University-School Partnership Centre of the Faculty of Education of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The project aims to provide professional training for teachers to master the concepts and skills of positive education, and then integrate the school’s diversified arts education to induce creativity and beauty in children, so that they can express themselves and affirm their self-worth in the process of creation, thereby achieving healthy physical, mental and spiritual growth.

Encouragement through the practice of love
Parents play a very important role in positive education and it is important for schools to combine the strengths of parents in order to implement positive education more effectively. For this reason, we have invited parents to participate in the artwork of their children during our Art Week, so that they can understand the theme of the activity and the process of art learning for their children. We also hope that parents will understand that “there is no right or wrong art”, and that they will praise, encourage and appreciate their children’s efforts in the process, and bring this encouragement to their daily lives.

Be a Positive Pioneer
There are many ways to practise positive thinking, but the point is not to be theoretical, it is to have love in your heart and communicate that love to your child. The most effective way is for parents to set an example by being positive and optimistic in their dealings with others, so that children can feel the positive energy of their parents and follow suit. We believe that if children are nurtured from an early age with a sense of inner goodness, the key foundation will be laid to help them learn to love each other and face adversities and difficulties positively.

Road Safety Talk

In response to the many traffic accidents that occur in Hong Kong every year, resulting in injuries and fatalities, the school invited the Road Safety Section of the West Kowloon Traffic Department to provide road safety talks to the children. On 3 December, two traffic police officers came to the school to talk to the children in Class N4 about road safety, while playing a quiz and watching a video on road safety.

After the activity, the children had a better understanding of the traffic facilities on the road, the rules to follow and the equipment for pedestrians to cross the road. The whole activity was full of positive and joyful experiences. It is hoped that the children will put their learning into practice and observe road safety.

“One Person, One Flower” programme

This year, the school continued to participate in the “One Person, One Flower” programme organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department. The aim of the “One Pereson One Flower” programme is to promote greening awareness among children, to cultivate their interest in planting and to contribute to the greening of the community. The theme flower planted this year was “Pansy”. Teachers first distributed a pansy seedling to the children and then carried out the potting process in school.

The focus of this activity is to let children experience the meaning of “life education”, rather than comparing the appearance of the plants, and the teacher discusses with the children how to solve and cope with different situations. This allows children to feel the importance of life education.
