2023-2024 School-based Chinese Culture Learning Activities

The picture book activity “Two Hua Dan”

The picture book activity titled “Two Hua Dan” tells the story of Hua Hua, a Chinese student with low self-confidence, and Shana, a South Asian student with weak Chinese language skills. Both are required by their mothers to join the school’s Cantonese opera class, where they overcome learning difficulties together and develop a strong friendship.

During several weeks of play-based teaching, picture books are used to introduce children to various aspects of Chinese culture and intangible heritage, such as Cantonese opera, floral plaque crafting, and lion dancing. This allows them to experience a diverse range of Chinese arts, sports, and traditional folk games, as well as appreciate different cultures from around the world. During this period, the school arranges field trips for the children and invites professional groups to perform at the school. This helps cultivate the children’s appreciation and creativity, encouraging them to express their understanding and creativity through various media.

“Two Hua Dan” Achievement Exhibition and Parent-Child Workshop

In conjunction with the picture book activity “Two Hua Dan,” which promotes Chinese culture and arts, parents are invited to personally experience the learning outcomes of their children during this period. They can enjoy and appreciate Chinese culture and arts together.

A parent-child workshop is arranged, inviting instructors to lead interactive sessions with parents. Class teachers assist, and it is delightful to see parents and children enjoying the activities together.
