Objectives
- To let children learn about the Mid-Autumn Festival as a traditional Chinese cultural celebration
- To let children experience the festive atmosphere of the Mid-Autumn Festival
- To let parents and children enjoy the fun of traditional Chinese festival activities together
Brief Discriptions
The school invites parents and children to come to school dressed in traditional Chinese attire to participate in the activities, which include: “Parent-Child Riddle Guessing and Mid-Autumn Festival Photo Zone,” “Parent-Child Mid-Autumn Festival Game Stalls (Arrow Tossing and ‘Houyi Shooting the Sun’ Archery),” , “Mid-Autumn Fruit Tasting,” “Parent-Child Craft Workshop” (“Moon Lanterns”/“Planet Lanterns”), and “Sensory Exploration of Light” (glow-in-the-dark graffiti wall, glow-in-the-dark water exploration, and coloured windows). These five categories of activities effectively help children understand that the Mid-Autumn Festival is a traditional Chinese cultural festival and learn about its celebratory customs. “Taste the Mid-Autumn Fruits” allows children to explore festive fruits such as star fruit, pears, pomelos, grapes, and persimmons using their senses (touch, sight, smell, and taste). The children thoroughly enjoyed the process of making fruit skewers, and after completing their creations, they sat down with their parents to savor the delicious fruits together. The “Parent-Child Craft Workshop” (“Moon Lanterns”/“Planet Lanterns”) provided an opportunity for parents and children to create together. Through this process, they communicated with one another, shared creative ideas, and helped children understand that the moon during the Mid-Autumn Festival is a “full moon” (N2) and that carrying lanterns is a traditional activity of the festival (N3 & N4). The lanterns made by the children and their parents can be taken home, and that evening, they can hold the “Moon Lantern” or carry the “Planet Lantern” to admire the moon with their families.
